Colonoscopy Preparation

Before you have a colonoscopy, you will have a bowel preparation to clean your bowel.

Please adhere to the bowel preparation instructions exactly as prescribed by Dr Ferencz for your procedure to ensure you prepare for your procedure optimally. Dr Ferencz utilises two different bowel preparations best suited to you, so please adhere to the correct one.

Any questions, please don’t hesitate to phone us during business hours.

NB: YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE YOUR COMPLETED FORMS TO THE ADMISSION OFFICE PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE DAY. THEY WILL INFORM YOU OF THE TIME TO ARRIVE AT THE HOSPITAL ON THE DAY OF THE PROCEDURE.

Glycoprep Bowel Preparation Instructions

NB: GLYCOPREP IS ORANGE 3 SACHETS.

1 Week Prior

For 1 week prior to the procedure stop all Iron supplementation and multigrain bread, cereal or anything with seeds in it.

1 Day Prior

  • No solid food today. Clear fluids only.
  • Clear fluids- water, clear fruit juices, soups or broths (with no solids or noodles), jelly (not red or green), Sports drinks, carbonated beverages, clear fruit cordials, water ice blocks, coffee and tea without milk. Steer clear of colourings such as red or greens.
  • At 6.00 pm start to drink the GLYCOPREP solution. Two sachets should be mixed with water of Coke Zero to a total volume of 2 litres. You will need to drink 2 litres of the preparation on the day prior to the procedure. 1 litre should be kept refrigerated until the next morning. Although the instructions on the packet say to drink the bowel preparation 1 litre per hour, some people cannot drink it this fast.  If this is the case you may take as long as necessary.  Some techniques which may help you to drink all the preparation are: keep it very chilled, drink through a straw. If you feel any nausea, simply slow the rate of drinking.
  • You may continue to have as much clear fluid as you want overnight and the next morning.

On the day of the procedure

  • Take your regular morning medications before 6.00 am.
  • 4 hours prior to the time of presentation to hospital you should drink the last 1 litre (i.e. the last sachet) of the bowel preparation.
  • Continue clear fluids until 2 hours before time of presentation to hospital.
  • Do not have anything to eat or drink in the 2 hours before coming to hospital for the procedure.
  • If you are unable to drink the preparation then please contact me at the rooms at 9.00am on the day of the procedure.

Colonoscopy Risks

  • 1 in 1000 burn or perforation (50% will require an operation)
  • 1 in 1000 bleeding (may require blood transfusion if severe)
