Gastroscopy

Gastroscopy Information & Preparation

gastroscopy Newcastle

What is Gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy, also known as upper endoscopy, involves using a thin flexible tube (endoscope) to examine the upper digestive tract. The tube is inserted into the mouth and travels down the food pipe (oesophagus), then into the stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum), to view these areas.

Instructions for before your Gastroscopy

  • On the night before the examination eat and drink normally, although it is a good idea to avoid alcoholic beverages.
  • On the day of the examination have a light breakfast before 8.00 am.
  • After 8.00 am you may have clear fluids (water, apple juice, lemonade, tea and coffee without milk)
  • Fasting from 2 hours before time of presentation to hospital –  Do not have anything to eat or drink after this time
  • If you have medications to take in the morning then have them before 8.00 am.

You need to take your completed forms to the hospital prior to the day of admission so that the admissions office can confirm the correct time for you to arrive at the hospital on the day of the procedure. I start my list at 1.00pm so the endoscopy will occur in the afternoon.
